11 Useful And Cool Adobe AIR Applications

Adobe AIR is a popular runtime that allows developers to bring web based applications to the desktop. It combines several technologies (HTML, Ajax, Flash, etc) to enable developers to create powerful applications. Its popularity as a means to develop user friendly and fun applications has rocketed through the roof, and more and more applications to do all sorts of things are being developed for Adobe AIR.

If you don’t already have Adobe AIR installed, you can get it from the Adobe site.

Here are 11 useful adobe AIR applications to do many things: pick fonts, search Wikipedia, edit images, and more. Enjoy!

1. Icon Generator

Icon Generator is a little application that lets you generate a Web 2.0 style icon quickly and easily. Pick the color, type the text, and save it.

An easy to use AIR app that allows you to keep track of expenses, generate invoices, and how you spent your time.

3. ImageSizer

ImageSizer is a helpful AIR app which allows you to batch process images. If you have a lot of images to resize, going through each and every one of them can be time consuming work. ImageSizer automates the process. Just drag and drop all the files you need to resize, set some specifications, and let the cool app do the work!

4. DiggTop

DiggTop brings Digg to your desktop. It is an application that lets you view a mashed up list of your favourite Digg topic or keyword feeds. In addition to the full Digg submission information, it will also display a slideshow of images it can obtain from the linked article.

5. DestroyTwitter

DestroyTwitter is a kick-ass (and I mean kick-ass) AIR-based Twitter (follow me on Twitter) client. There are other AIR-based clients for Twitter too (twhirl, TweetDeck, etc), but DestroyTwitter really stands out. It consists a series of “canvases” (home tab, replies, etc), which constantly update to get you the latest tweets. If you use Twitter a lot, this app is for you!

Shrink-o-Matic is another app to resize images. As in ImageSizer, you drag and drop the required photos, set the size requirements, and press the go button. All done.

7. Doomi

Doomi is a simple and straightforward to-do list (see : online To-Do lists). Its drag and drop interface makes it easy and fun to use. Set reminders, alerts, and get work done.

8. Wikipedia Desktop Widget

Wikipedia Desktop Widget brings Wikipedia to your desktop. Instead of having to open up a web browser, navigating to the Wikipedia site, and searching for information, you can instantly search Wikipedia from your desktop using this AIR-based app. Very useful.

9. ImageDropr

ImageDropr has a simple drag and drop interface that allows you to easily upload images (from your hard drive) to your Flickr account. Easy, and fun.

10. Font Picker

FontPicker can be extremely useful for web designers. It allows you to see how text looks like, under each font that you have in your system. So, type in some sample text, and see how it looks like all the fonts that you have.

11. Splashup (Light)

Splashup is a cool AIR app to add effects to images. Enhance your images, colorize them and much more. And if you like it, you can upgrade, to get even more features.

    Hey Siyab:

    Great site. Excellent collection of Apps. ImageSizer looks like a promising alternate to PIXResizer (which I use now).

    BTW “10. Font Picker” has the wrong app in the image below. :)

    Oh and Check out Mixero which is also a great Twitter App based on AIR. Helps manage content more easily than all the others.
